Birds are as susceptible to infection as any other pet. You should be especially prepared in an emergency.

Breeders are looking for anything that helps them take care of their pets, and they are always looking for tools and means of care.

It is always a good idea to have a Bird first aid kit that meets your pets’ specific needs. This is why a bird first aid kit is an essential part of every bird fancier medicine box.

What should be in a bird first aid kit?

To prepare for these bird first aid kit at home. You must make one yourself and include the following items:

• Styptic powder :  is an antiseptic clotting agent that is most often used in pet grooming. Much like a styptic pencil, which is made of alum, the powder stops bleeding by contracting the blood vessels.
• Cornstarch
• Antiseptic wipes : they are used for sterilizing. Antiseptic wipes kill germs and sanitize skin or whatever surface to which they are applied.

• Eye/skin wash
• Gauze or telfa pads : wound dressings used for either primary or secondary wound care applications.
  
• Vet wrap : hold gauze pads and medication in place on the horse’s legs and hooves
• Cotton swabs and balls
• Medical tape (not waterproof) : is used to attach bandages, gauze, and other dressings to skin around wounds.

• Masking tape : used mainly in painting, to mask off areas that should not be painted.
• Betadyne or iodine solution: used on the skin to treat or prevent skin infection in minor cuts, scrapes, or burns.
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Hand feeding formula (will keep fresh in freezer for about 6 months) and syringes

• Scissors
• Tweezers : used for grasping objects too small to be easily handled with the human fingers
  
• Eyedropper : re used to treat many common conditions. They may be used for itchy or tired eyes as in allergies
  

• Popsicle sticks for splinting
• Latex gloves : are an effective shield for the hands and wrists against certain chemicals, including detergents, alcohols, biohazards such as viruses and bacteria, bodily fluids, abrasive materials, and more
• Forceps or hemostat (locking) : These ratcheted forceps, also known as locking forceps, are used to keep tissue or objects in place or to provide hemostasis.
  
• Pedialyte (electrolyte solution for children) : edialyte electrolyte drink is medical-grade hydration that quickly replenishes lost fluids and electrolytes. Pedialyte promotes fluid absorption more effectively than sports drinks, juice, or even water. 
  
• Magnifying glass
• Penlight
• Heating pad or lamp

Is Betadine good for birds?

Diluted chlorhexidine and betadine should be used away from the mouth, ear canals and eyes. This medication is considered effective and safe for birds.
It is not recommended to use ointment, petroleum jelly, or other thick or oily substances on birds without a veterinarian’s recommendation. These products may stain the feathers and prevent the bird from isolating itself.
